The authors examine a plane-strain problem of transient coupled thermoelastodynamic disturbances in a homogeneous isotropic half-space due to the impulsive application of concentrated thermal and mechanical sources in the interior of the body. The half-space is endowed with homogeneous initial displacement-temperature conditions, and its boundary is traction-free and thermally insulated. The authors obtain a formal solution to the problem by means of one-sided Laplace transform with respect to time, and two-sided Laplace transform with respect to the horizontal space variable. The normal displacement at the half-space boundary corresponding to a concentrated impulsive heat source and zero body forces is computed in an asymptotic form for large times, and numerically for small times.
