Let \(E\) be a finite dimensional real normed vector space with a bilinear form \(\phi:E\otimes E\to \mathbb R\). Suppose that \(E\) is an algebra (not necessarily associative) such that \[ \| xy\| ^2+\phi(x,y)^2=\| x\| ^2\| y\| ^2 \] for all \(x,y\in E.\) Then \(\dim_{\mathbb R}E=1,2,3,4,7,8.\) Conversely an Euclidean space of the mentioned dimension with a scalar product \((x,y)\) is provided with a multiplication \(xy\) and a norm \(\| x\| \) such that \[ \| xy\| ^2+(x,y)^2=\| x\| ^2\| y\| ^2 \] for all \(x,y\in E\).
