The authors consider the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the \(p\)-system with linear damping \(v_t-u_x=0\), \(u_t+p(v)_x=-\alpha u\) on the half-line \({\mathbb R}_+\), with the Dirichlet boundary condition \(u|_{x=0}=0\) or the Neumann boundary condition \(u_x|_{x=0}=0\). The initial data \((v_0,u_0)\) is assumed to converge to the constant state \((v_+,u_+)\) as \(x\to+\infty\). The main concern in the paper is the boundary effect. In the case of null-Dirichlet boundary condition on \(u\) it is proved that the solution \((v,u)\) tends to \((v_+,0)\) as \(t\to\infty\). In the case of null-Neumann boundary condition on \(u\) the solution \((v,u)\) is proved to tend to \((\bar v,0)\) where \(\bar v =\bar v(x,t)\) is the diffusion wave connecting the states \(v_0(0)\) and \(v_+\). The optimal convergence rate is also obtained in both cases but for the Neumann boundary condition it is supposed in addition that \(v_0(0)=v_+\).
