This paper is an exercise in axiomatics. The authors goal is to provide an axiomatic foundation for a number of quality-adjusted life years utility models. Such models are used to distinguish between different treatment modes for patients are designed to capture the idea that not just the amount by which life is prolonged matters. The quality of the life lived is also salient. The authors examines assumptions based on expected utility as well as rank dependent utility.
