Let us first briefly review the historical context. \textit{R. J. Daverman} [ibid. 33, No. 2, 173-184 (1989; Zbl 0684.57009)] studies the converse of the following: Roughly, the fibers of an approximate fibration proper map are shape equivalent. Daverman's [loc. cit.] context is decompositions of manifolds. More specifically, we recall the following definition from Daverman [loc. cit.]; a closed \(n\)-manifold \(N\) is a codimension-2 fibrator provided for any proper map \(p:M\to B\) from an \((n+2)\)-manifold \(M\) to a 2-manifold \(B\) with \(p^{-1}(b)\) shape equivalent to \(N\) for every \(b\in B\), it follows \(p\) is an approximate fibration. It is natural to ask: Which manifolds \(N\) are codimension-2 fibrators? Starting with the aforementioned paper, Daverman continues his study of this question in subsequent papers, see this paper under review for references. Here is a brief and rather rough summary of some of the key results from these papers: Codimension-2 fibrators include simply connected manifolds, closed surfaces with nonzero Euler characteristic, real projective \(n\)-spaces, \(n>1\), and numerous orientable manifolds (we leave this ambiguous to gain expediency). Another result of Daverman of specific interest for this review is: Every Hopfian \(n\)-manifold \(N\) with hyper-Hopfian fundamental group is a codimension-2 orientable fibrator. This, however, leaves open the question whether ``orientable'' can be deleted from this assertion. \textit{N. Chinen} [ibid. 86, No. 2, 151-167 (1998; Zbl 0930.57020)] provides an affirmative answer when \(N\) has no 2-fold covering. What about \(N\) if it has a 2-fold covering? Again, Chinen [loc. cit.] treats this case as well and obtains some interesting results. Using this as a starting point, this paper under review obtains additional results by imposing a condition ``strongly Hopfian'' (too technical to state). The main result is: Every strongly Hopfian closed manifold \(N\) with hyper-Hopfian fundamental group is a codimension-2 fibrator. Many corollaries of this result are also stated. The techniques of proof used in these papers provide an interesting confluence of geometric and algebraic topology.
