Central bialgebras are defined in a braided category as algebras in the center of the category of coalgebras in this category. The opposite product can be defined in a natural way for these bialgebras. Coquasitriangular structures on central bialgebras are defined and the antipode of a coquasitriangular central Hopf algebra is studied. A method for constructing central bialgebras from central coalgebras is described.
