In 1956, Jeśmanowicz conjectured that if \(a\), \(b\), and \(c\) satisfy \(a^2+b^2=c^2\), then the equation \(a^x+b^y=c^z\) has only the positive solution \((x,y,z)=(2,2,2)\). This paper proposes the following more general conjecture: If \(a\), \(b\), \(c\), \(p\), \(q\), \(r\) are fixed positive rational integers such that \(a^p+b^q=c^r\), with \(p\), \(q\), \(r\geq 2\) and \(a\) and \(b\) coprime, then the diophantine equation \(a^x+b^y=c^z\) has only the positive integral solution \((x,y,z)=(p,q,r)\). Moreover, using Baker's theory, the authors obtain a partial result in the case \(a^2+lb^2=c^r\), with \(r\) odd \({}\geq 3\).
