A conformal algebra is a linear space \(C\) endowed with a linear operator \(D:C\to C\) and a sequence of bilinear products \(a_n b\) for \(a,b\in C\) and \(n\in \mathbb Z_+\) [cf. \textit{V. G. Kac}, Vertex algebras for beginners, University Lecture Series, Vol. 10, AMS (1997; Zbl 0861.17017)]; by the locality axiom there is \(N=N(a,b)\) such that \(a_n b=0\) for any \(n\geq N\). In the paper under review the author studies free conformal algebras \(C(N)\), generated by the set \(\mathcal B\), corresponding to the ``locality function'' \(N:\mathcal B\times\mathcal B \to \mathbb Z_+\). For a constant locality function \(N\) the author describes a basis of the free vertex algebra, i.e., of the universal enveloping vertex algebra \(V=V(C)\) of the free Lie conformal algebra \(C=C(N)\); the basis elements are of the form \(a_1(n_1)\dots a_k(n_k)\mathbf 1\), \(a_i\in\mathcal B\), \(n_i\in\mathbb Z\), satisfying certain conditions like \(n_i-n_{i+1}\leq N\). A basis of the algebra of coefficients of a free Lie conformal algebra is also constructed, as well as a basis of the algebra of coefficients of a free associative conformal algebra. These results are obtained by using the Diamond Lemma for associative algebras.
