It is shown that the normal modal analysis can be effectively applied to the study of linear vibrating systems, and to obtain easily frequency-domain characteristics of the systems. The reviewed article presents a direct method of modal analysis for fluid-structure interaction in pipe flows with arbitrary boundary conditions and dissipative terms. The method is verified by comparison with an exact analytical solution, and by analyzing numerical solutions obtained by Fourier transform and by the method of characteristics.
