The authors carry out the linear stability analysis of steady Bénard-Marangoni convection in two initially resting viscous immiscible electrically conducting fluid layers bounded by a horizontal isothermal solid surface below, and by a free surface above. The authors assume that the interface and free surface are flat, but additionally give some results for a slightly deformed free surface. The influence of Rayleigh number and Chandrasekhar number on the critical Marangoni number is examined in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field. In particular, the authors investigate how marginal stability characteristics of this two-layer system are influenced simultaneously by Marangoni and Rayleigh numbers in the presence of the magnetic field.
