The stability of Electric Power Systems (EPS) has been always of constant interest. In expressing the behaviour of such systems, energy or power equalities rather than voltages or current ones are used. Therefore, the nonlinearities appear through quadratic forms in voltages. In the literature several models for describing EPS are used. The present paper provides an energy function approach. First, a compact canonical form of equations (I) including the previously known model is presented, with the assumption of losslessness of the transmitting networks. Starting from the system (I), a new set of equations (II) is introduced. Then a theorem relating the hyperbolicity of equilibrium points of (I) in terms of those of (II) is proved. Next, it is shown that for equations (II) there exists always an energy function allowing to characterize the equilibrium points. Finally, the energy function for a one-axis generator with a simplified exitator model is presented. The paper obviously brings a new interesting point of view into the field of stability of EPS.
