The author investigates the electric-magnetic duality within the context of a Maxwell \(p\)-form theory in \(D=2p+2\)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime \(M^{2p+2}\). The motivation of such investigation comes from a string theory where one considers \(p\)-branes interacting with a gauge field. In the paper new (reduced) variables are defined which solve the Gauss constraints. It is shown that the phase space of a \(p\)-form theory is endowed with the canonical symplectic structure. It is found a universal \(\text{SO}(2)\) symmetry of a \(p\)-form Maxwell theory for both odd and even \(p\). The quantization condition for \(p\)-brane dyons is given.
