Considers in detail the generating functions that occur in combinatorics and discrete statistical mechanics. The models considered are various polyomino generating functions, though the generating function for the Potts model are referred to. The closely related concepts of inversion relations and reciprocity relations are carefully defined and discussed, and it is pointed out that, on certain circumstances the complete generating function is determined by the inversion or reciprocity relation plus obvious symmetry relations. Reviewers note: This seems likely to be a seminal paper heralding further advances. The relation between the transfer-matrix approach and duality-inversion relations for a problem is often far from obvious.
