\textit{P. B. Kronheimer} and \textit{T. S. Mrowka} [Math. Res. Lett. 1, No.~6, 797-808 (1994; 851.57023)] proved the following theorem: the smallest genus of a smoothly embedded surface in \(\mathbb{C} P^2\) representing the degree \(d\) homology class in \(H_2(\mathbb{C} P^2)\) is \((d-1) (d-2)/2\). This confirms Thom's conjecture in the case of the complex projective plane \(\mathbb{C} P^2\). The paper under review is an expository paper where the author presents this proof.
