A new approach is proposed to studying \(n\)-disjoint operators which consists in interpreting properties of an operator in terms of some Banach--Kantorovich lattice associated with the operator. Using this interpretation, the author establishes characterizations of \(n\)-disjoint operators acting into order-complete vector lattices (also called Dedekind complete Riesz spaces or K-spaces) in terms of orthomorphisms. This generalizes and supplements a criterion for lattice homomorphism previously obtained by the reviewer in [Sov. Math., Dokl. 17 (1976), 1428-1431 (1977; Zbl 0394.47018)]. A description is also presented for an \(n\)-disjoint operator which develops a result of \textit{C. B. Huijsmans} and \textit{W. A. J. Luxemburg} [Acta Appl. Math. 27, No. 1-2, 67-71 (1992; Zbl 0807.47023)]. The author obtains a unique (up to mixings with respect to the Boolean algebra of projections) decomposition of an \(n\)-disjoint operator into a disjoint sum of order-bounded, disjointness preserving operators. This improves a result of \textit{S. J. Bernau, C. B. Huijsmans,} and \textit{B. De Pagter} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 115, No. 1, 151-156 (1992; Zbl 0780.46004)]. In addition, a description is suggested of the Boolean algebra of components for an \(n\)-disjoint operator acting into an order-complete vector space.
