The paper investigates the problem of approximating non-causal 3-D digital filters in the spatial domain. An algorithm is proposed for obtaining a structure for 3-D IIR (infinite impulse response) filters with small roundoff noise and no overflow oscillations. The design of non-causal filters can be carried out within three steps: (1) A given non-causal impulse response is transformed into the first octant using the proposed 3-D invertible mapping technique; (2) The transformed impulse response in the first octant is approximated by balanced model reduction of 3-D separable denominator systems; (3) The resultat 3-D IIR filter is transformed back to the original coordinates. The implementation of the obtained filters is considered on the basis of fixed point arithmetic methods. An algorithm for finding a state-space realization is presented, which leads to a structure with very small global roundoff noise and with relative high computational efficiency. The obtained structure is also shown to be free of overflow oscillations.
