Motivated by examples in group \(C^*\)-algebras, \textit{R. J. Archbold} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 69, 121-143 (1994; Zbl 0847.46026)] introduced upper and lower multiplicities, \(M_U(\pi)\) and \(M_L(\pi)\), for an irreducible representation \(\pi\) of an arbitrary \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\). Studying convergence of trace functions of convergent nets in the dual \(\widehat A\) of \(A\) involves these multiplicity numbers. Roughly speaking, \(M_U(\pi)\) and \(M_L(\pi)\) is the greatest and least ``strength'' with which a net in \(\widehat A\) can converge to \(\pi\), respectively. Currently research mainly concentrates on studying these multiplicity numbers for group \(C^*\)-algebras. In the paper under review the authors establish formulae for \(M_U(\pi)\) and \(M_L(\pi)\) for \(\pi\) an irreducible representation of a Moore group (a group with finite dimensional irreducible representations). Both, \(M_U(\pi)\) and \(M_L(\pi)\) are realized as the usual multiplicity of \(\pi\) as a subrepresentation of certain induced representations. In particular, each positive integer appears as upper multiplicity of an irreducible representation of some Moore group. A question that remains open is whether lower multiplicities greater than one can occur at all. Finally, let \(G\) be a locally compact group with small invariant neighbourhoods of the identity, and suppose that \(M_U(\pi)<\infty\) for at least one irreducible representation \(\pi\) of \(G\). It is shown that then the set of all such \(\pi\) coincides with the set of irreducible representations of the quotient group of \(G\) by some compact normal subgroup.
