The author obtains necessary and in some cases sufficient conditions for the extension of a two-side invariant metric from a subgroup of a SIN-group onto the group. As a result, he obtains that if \(H\) is a normal subgroup of a first countable SIN-group \(G\) and \(d\) is a \(G\)-invariant metric on \(H\), in the sense that \(d(axb,ayb)=d(x,y)\) for all \(x,y\in H\) and \(a,b\in G\), then the metric \(d\) can be extended onto \(G\). It is also proved that every admissible metric defined on an open subgroup of an abelian group \(G\) can be extended onto the group. Finally, some helpful examples are given in order to contrast the main results of the paper.
