The concept of shadowing was introduced as a tool to analyze the long time behaviour of discrete dynamical systems under perturbations. In this paper the authors apply this concept to the difference equations which arise in the discrete numerical methods for several types of differential equations. In this context, some theoretical results as well as numerical experiments are presented to show the usefulness of the idea of shadowing. The paper ends pointing out that the idea of shadowing is also related to the method of modified equations and to the backward error analysis in the numerical solution of differential equations.
