    Let \(X= X(R)\) be a normed space of functions defined on the real axis \(R\), such that the set \(X_ N\) of all restrictions of functions in \(X\) to the interval \(I_ N=[-N,N]\) form a subspace of \(X\), for any \(N>0\). For \(A,B\subseteq X\) put \(S(A)_ N=\{f\in A: \| f\|_ X\leq 1\}\) and \(E(A,B,X)= \sup_{f\in A}\inf_{g\in B}\| f- g\|\). Let also \(K(\varepsilon,N,A)=\min\{\dim B: B\subseteq X_ N, E(S(A)_ N,B,X_ N)<\varepsilon\}\), where \(\dim B\) denotes the dimension of a finite- dimensional subspace of \(X_ N\) and \(A\) is a subset of \(X\). The average dimension \(\sigma\) of a subspace \(A\) of \(X\) is defined by \(\sigma=\overline{\dim} A=\lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\varliminf_{N\to\infty} (2N)^{-1} K(\varepsilon,N,A)\). For a sunset \(M\) of \(X\) and \(\sigma>0\), the quantity \(\bar d_ \sigma(M,X)=\inf\{E(M,A,X): A\subseteq X, \varlimsup A\leq\sigma\}\) is called the Kolmogorv average \(\sigma\)-width (\(\sigma-K\) width in short) of the set \(M\), a notion considered first by V. M. Tikhomirov in 1980. The main purpose of this paper is to determine the exact values of the average \(\sigma-K\) widths in \(L_ q(R)\) for the Sobolev-Wiener classes \(W^ r_{pq}=\{f\in L_ q(R): f^{(r-1)}\) is absolutely continuous on every finite interval, \(f^{(r)}\in L_{pq}(R)\) and \(\| f^{(r)}\|_{pq}\leq 1\}\) and the optimal subspaces \(A_ 0\) of \(L_ q(R)\), i.e. those subspaces which satisfy \(\bar d_ n(W^ r_{pq},L_ q)= E(W^ r_{pq},A_ 0, X)\). The problem is connected to the problem of optimal interpolation in \(W^ r_{pq}\).
