A system of four (nonlinear, coupled) ordinary differential equations is investigated. This ODE-system arises as a model of two competing species of microorganisms for two complementing resources in a chemostat. The form of the uptake functions is based on an additive model proposed by \textit{O'Neill} et al. [Ecological Modelling 46, 147-163 (1989)]. The authors prove existence and boundedness of the solutions of the Cauchy problem and derive a variety of conditions ensuring existence and stability of the possible equilibria.
