The author remarks that certain theorems in papers by F. John (1966) and M. Hayes (1968) were already proved in a paper by C. Tolotti (1943); he goes on to determine conditions such that shock waves can propagate in a hyperelastic medium, the elastic potential of which has the form suggested by Hadamard.
