The author studied the fundamental requirements and formulation of elastoplastic constitutive equations with tangential plasticity. In order to extend an elastoplastic constitutive equation to describe the dependency of a plastic stretching on a stress rate component tangential to the yield surface, he first formulated two fundamental requirements, which have to be fulfilled in elastoplastic constitutive equations. One of them is the work rate or stiffness relaxation, and the other one is the continuity condition of the stress rate. He formulated the elastoplastic constitutive equation with a ``single, smooth'' yield surface, to fulfill these requirements, in which a plastic stretching depends on a stress rate component tangential to the yield surface. That is why he called this a tangential plasticity. Based on this, he formulated a concrete constitutive equation for metals with isotropic kinematic hardening and tangential plasticity. This formulation is capable of describing the general loading behavior including non- proportional, reverse loading and reloading. He also compared the mechanical response considered in the present work with traditional \(J_ 2\) theory of flow. This work is quite interesting and may be useful for those researchers working in the area of plastic flow.
