The author considers the (generalized) Carlitz zeta function \(\zeta(s)\) for the three function fields of genus one and class number one [see \textit{J. Leitzel}, \textit{M. L. Madan} and \textit{C. S. Queen}, J. Number Theory 7, 11-27 (1975; Zbl 0318.12009)]. He gives an elementary proof that, in these cases, the values \(\zeta(s)\) for \(s\leq q\) are irrational. Transcendence of these values was established earlier, by other methods, by \textit{D. S. Thakur} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 1992, No. 9, 185-197 (1992; Zbl 0756.11015)], using the general transcendence results of \textit{J. Yu} [Invent. Math. 83, 507-517 (1986; Zbl 0586.12010)].
