This paper is the complete exposition of the results most of which were announced earlier in [the authors, Sov. Math., Dokl. 44, No. 2, 370-374 (1992); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 320, No. 1, 15-19 (1991; Zbl 0786.54025)]. A space \(X\) is \(\sigma\)-pseudocompact provided for every continuous function \(f: X \to \mathbb{R}\) with a \(\sigma\)-compact support, \(f\) is bounded. The authors give various criteria of \(\sigma\)-pseudocompactness and consider the maximal \(\sigma\)-pseudocompact extension \(\delta X\).
