[For a review of Vol. 1 see (1992; Zbl 0781.93002).] The monograph consists of three parts. Part I is concerned with the theory of controllability and observability both for finite and infinite- dimensional linear systems. The general results can be specialized to obtain exact or approximate controllability criteria for parabolic and hyperbolic partial differential equations. Stabilizability properties of abstract dynamical systems are also considered. Part II is devoted to a study of the quadratic cost optimal control problem over finite-time horizon for linear abstract dynamical systems. This part presents a complete solution of the subject both for parabolic and hyperbolic systems and for bounded and unbounded control operators. The use of dynamic programming leads to a synthesis of the optimal control in feedback form. Part III is concerned with the quadratic cost optimal control problem over infinite-time horizon. Using the concepts of stabilizability and detectability this problem is effectively solved both for systems with bounded and unbounded control operators. Some special cases are also considered.
