Let \((M,g,J)\) be an almost Hermitian manifold, \(m\in M\) and \(\alpha\) an antiholomorphic plane of \(T_ m M\), that is \(J\alpha\subset \alpha^ \perp\). Then \((M,g,J)\) is said to have constant type at \(m\) if for an orthonormal basis \((x,y)\) of \(\alpha\) we have \(R(x,y,x,y)- R(x,y,Jx,Jy)= a(m)\) where \(a\) does not depend on \(\alpha\). This notion has been introduced by the reviewer as a generalization of the corresponding one introduced by A. Gray for the class of nearly Kähler manifolds. In this paper the author introduces the notion of constant type in a weak sense by replacing the above condition by R\((x,y,x,y)+ R(Jx, Jy,Jx, Jy)- 2R(x,y, Jx,Jy)= b(m)\). A Riemannian manifold is said to be of constant type if the first condition holds for all \(m\) and it is said to be an almost constant type manifold if the second one holds for all \(m\). Further the author derives several equivalent definitions and studies the notion in relation with curvature identities, Ricci and scalar curvatures, holomorphic and antiholomorphic sectional curvatures. The study yields several results which contain some of those obtained by A. Gray, F. Bouten and the reviewer as special cases.
