The linear combination of the surface Helmholtz equation (the classical integral formulation of the Helmholtz equation in an exterior domain) with the differentiated surface Helmholtz equation by use of a real one- signed function (coupling parameter) leads to a uniquely solvable integral equation. The properties and the numerical analysis of the collocation solution of this equation, as well as a ``nearly optimal'' choice of the coupling parameter are the main topics of this paper. The effect of numerical integration on the accuracy of discrete collocation methods is compared with that of discretization. The author shows that in the discrete collocation method the discretization error is dominant.
