This paper is concerned with the character of the averaged equations of a two-phase gas/particulate flow in differential form [\textit{D. A. Drew}, Ann. Rev. Fluid Mech. 15, 261-291 (1983; Zbl 0569.76104)]. The two-phase flow consists of a continuous phase and a dispersed phase which are assumed to be a gas and composed of incompressible solid particles, respectively. Each phase is first treated separately, and then the averaged equations of two-phase flow are derived for both laminar and turbulent flow, and their interpretation is provided in one space dimension. In derivation, attention is restricted to algebraic constitutive laws, and some of the conservation laws are considered for the gas and solid phases. The hyperbolicity of the averaged equations is investigated, individually or in combination form, for the effects of fluctuation, interfacial pressure, virtual mass, intergranular stress, laminar and turbulent energy friction factor terms and alike. The qualitative results concerning the nature of such effects are obtained. This is an interesting paper, and it is of interest to the researchers engaged in the mathematical modelling of multiphase flows.
