The monograph consists of a series of lectures that the author gave at the Fields Institute in 1993. The lectures are concerned with the geometrical viewpoint of some aspects of global dynamics of nonlinear systems. The systems of interest are the perturbations of Hamiltonian systems. The Hamiltonian, non-Hamiltonian and periodic on time depending perturbations are considered. The subject matter is geometry of homoclinic and heteroclinic structure which can occur in the perturbations of the systems having homoclinic or heteroclinic loop of stable and unstable manifolds. Melnikov's method is used in order to find the intersections of stable and unstable manifolds of perturbed systems. The case of three-dimensional periodic perturbations is of special interest and complexity. The developed methods are applied to the study of the driven Morse oscillation which is a model for describing interatomic forces in molecules. The other application of methods is an investigation of Stokes flow which describes the motion of fluid particles between two cylinders. Finally the author considers dynamics of a modal truncation of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
