The author introduces a fuzzy generalization of the maximum likelihood classification procedure proposed by \textit{A. J. Scott} and \textit{M. J. Symons} [Biometrics 27, 387-397 (1971)]. Extensions of fuzzy clustering algorithms of Trauwaert, Kaufman and Rousseeuw are presented. A new class of clustering algorithms, called penalized fuzzy \(c\)-means clustering algorithms, are derived.
