The present book is a first step towards establishing a bridge between nonlinear analysis, nonlinear operator equations and the theory of holomorphic mappings on Banach spaces. In order to make this book accessible not only to specialists but also to students and engineers, the authors give a complete account of definitions and proofs. The book is divided into 10 chapters: Chapter 0: Preliminaries. Contains basic definitions and theorems (without proofs) from topology and functional analysis, including directedness (= nets), metrizability, weak topology and reflexivity, Hilbert spaces. Chapter 1: Differential calculus in normed spaces. Gâteaux and Fréchet differentiability, higher order derivatives, examples in classical (real or complex) Banach spaces \(C[a,b]\), \(L^p[a,b]\). Chapter 2: Integration in normed spaces. Riemann-Stieltjes and Pettis integrals are presented. Chapter 3: Holomorphic (analytic) operators and vector-functions on complex Banach spaces. The core of the book; significant results for the theory of functions of a single complex variable are generalized to the infinite dimensional case. Chapter 4: Linear operators. Contains standard topics such as spectrum, normally solvable operators, projections, invariant subspaces. Chapter 5: Nonlinear equations with differentiable operators. Banach fixed point principle is applied to invertible operators, with estimation of the domain of invertibility. Chapter 6: Nonlinear equations with holomorphic operators. Convergence of the sequence of iterations of an holomorphic operator; a priori and a posteriori error estimates. Chapter 7: Banach manifolds. Basic results; also presents Stein manifolds. Chapter 8: Nonregular solutions of nonlinear equations. Ramifications of solutions, fixed points for an analytic operator. Chapter 9: Operators on spaces with indefinite metric. The indefinite metric \(J_ \nu(x)= \| P_+ x\|^\nu - \| P_- x\|^\nu\) is studied (\(P_+\), \(P_-\) mutually complementary projections in a Banach space) and some relevant applications of the holomorphic mapping theory in this setting are given. The references contains over 100 titles (until 1985), with special emphasis on the former SU contributions on the subject.
