    For \(n> 0\) let \({\mathcal F}_ n\) be the set of all linear subspaces \(M\) of \(L_ 1(\mathbb{R})\) satisfying the condition \[ \lim_{a\to\infty} {\dim M|[-a,a]\over 2a}\leq n. \] If \({\mathcal M}\subseteq L_ 1(\mathbb{R})\), then \[ d_ n({\mathcal M},L_ 1)= \inf_{M\in {\mathcal F}_ n} \sup_{f\in {\mathcal M}} \inf_{g\in M} \| f- g\|_ 1 \] is the ``infinite-dimensional \(n\)-\(K\) width'' of \(\mathcal M\) in \(L_ 1(\mathbb{R})\) [see \textit{Chun Li}, J. Approximation Theory 69, 15-34 (1992; Zbl 0776.41019)]. A member \(M^*\) of \({\mathcal F}_ n\) is said to be optimal for this width if the infimum over \(M\in {\mathcal F}_ n\) is attained when \(M= M^*\). A corresponding ``infinite-dimensional linear \(n\)-width'' is also defined. Let \(P_ r\) be a polynomial of degree \(r\) with real zeros and \(P_ r(D)\) the associated differential operator. The paper studies the infinite-dimensional \(n\)-widths and linear \(n\)-widths in \(L_ 1(\mathbb{R})\) (\(n\) an integer) of the Wiener-Sobolev classes \(W_{p,1}(P_ r(D)\)), which, for given \(p\), consists of those \(f\in L_ 1(\mathbb{R})\) such the \(f^{(r-1)}\) exists and is locally absolutely continuous, and \[ \sum_{j\in \mathbb{Z}} \| P_ r(D)f| [j,j+ 1]\|_ p< \infty. \] Exact values for \(1\leq p\leq \infty\) of the two infinite-dimensional \(n\)- widths are determined (for each \(p\) they are equal); certain infinite- dimensional spaces of splines are identified as optimal for the \(n\)- widths and certain interpolation operators are identified as optimal for the linear \(n\)-widths.
