    Let \(C_{[a,b]}^ \infty\) denote the class of functions which are infinitely differentiable on \([a,b]\). Let \(\Pi_ n\) be the set of algebraic polynomials of degree \(\leq n\) and let \(\Pi_ n^ k= \{f(x):= \sum_{j=0}^ n a_ j x^ j\): \(a_ k=0\}\), where \(k\) is a natural number. For \(f\in C_{[a,b]}\) let \(E_ n(f,a,b)= \inf \{\| f- p\|_{[a,b]}\): \(p\in \Pi_ n\}\) and \(E_{n,k} (f,a,b)= \inf\{\| f-q\|_{[a,b]}\): \(q\in \Pi_ n^ k\}\). The author in this note obtains six theorems in connection with certain conjectures of \textit{M. Hasson} [J. Approximation Theory 29, 103-115 (1980; Zbl 0456.41016)]. A typical result is as follows. Theorem. There exists a function \(f\in C_{[0,1]}^ \infty\) such that \(\limsup_{n\to\infty} {{E_{n,k} (f,0,1)}\over {E_ n(f,0,1)}}<\infty\).
