A space \(X\) is said to be cleavable over a class \(\mathcal P\) of topological spaces if for every subset \(A\) of \(X\) there exist \(Y\in{\mathcal P}\) and a continuous mapping \(f: X\to Y\) such that \(f^{-1}f(A)= A\). This interesting paper investigates the problem whether a compact space which is cleavable over the class \(\mathcal P\) (resp. \({\mathcal Q}\subset{\mathcal P})\) of pseudo-radial (resp. \(R\)-monolithic) spaces is also in \({\mathcal P}\) (resp. \(\mathcal Q)\). The answer is positive for the class \(\mathcal Q\) (Theorem 13), while for the class \(\mathcal P\) one has a consistent positive answer under CH or under \(c=\omega_ 2+2^ c\leq\omega_{\omega_ 1}\) (Theorem 5).
