For an associative ring \(R\), a (right) \(R\)-module \(A\) has the Baer splitting property (BSP), if every surjection \(A^{(c)}\to A^{(d)}\) splits, for any cardinals \(c\) and \(d\). It has the finite BSP, if the requirement is restricted to finite cardinals \(d\) and it has the endlich BSP, if the finite restriction is imposed on both of the cardinals. The subject owes most of its existence to the work of abelian group theorists. The author organizes known results on the subject (such as those of Albrecht, Arnold and Lady) and gives them a more general form (defining and examining the properties of pairs \((A, P)\)). It is shown that a torsion free group of finite rank has the finite BSP if and only if it has the endlich BSP; counterexamples are given to show that this result is not true even for countable modules, but the question remains as to how it can be extended to cater for the natural countable case.
