In the study under review, the author presents Renato Caccioppoli as he really was and as he was seen by his contemporaries, both pupils and colleagues: a complex intellectual, for whom all forms of culture were felt as indispensable for his very existence as a rational, spiritual being, whose personality was happily combining the inventive capacity -- usually characterising the youth -- with the profound capacity of selecting the most suitable themes of investigation -- which only maturity can give -- and thus realizing an impressive mathematical work. His main domains of mathematical interest -- involving a genuine intellectual contribution -- included, among others, real and functional analysis, complex analysis, representation of the analytical and holomorphic functions, a.s.o. Caccioppoli's mathematical demonstrations were always challenging, indeed, as he seemed to realize the convergence of imprevisible directions of thought, leaving the reader -- and, more than that, asking him/her! -- to complete by oneself the details of the demonstration performed. The idea of participation and cooperation is strongly felt.
