One sided orthogonal linear and cubic splines which are generated from one end of the interval in the direction of the other are introduced. Such splines have intervals of support which are on an average about half of the basic interval and are biased towards one end of the interval. To improve on this, two sided orthogonal splines are discussed. The construction is based on recurrence procedure using \(B\)-splines. Applications to (i) least squares approximation, (ii) smoothing of noisy data, (iii) the regularisation of integral transforms and specifically to the finite moment problem are also described. (ii) and (iii) have been tested numerically.
