The theory and applications of wavelets have become a very active field of research in the last few years because they are standing at the intersection of the frontiers of mathematics, scientific computing, and signal processing. For useful motivations and applications that underlie current wavelet constructions, see \textit{Y. Meyer} [Wavelets: algorithms and applications. SIAM, Philadelphia (1993)]. Starting with a general characterization of orthonormal systems in the complex Hilbert space \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R})\) which is based on a periodization argument of Poisson summation formula type, the paper under review presents a carefully written survey of the field of wavelets with compactly supported Fourier transforms. The article is of an expository character and destined for readers who are familiar with the fundamentals of Abelian harmonic analysis. It actually deals with a more specialized class of band-limited wavelets having infinitely differentiable Fourier transforms as introduced by \textit{P.-G. LemariƩ} and \textit{Y. Meyer} [Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 2, No. 1/2, 1-18 (1987; Zbl 0657.42028)] and specifically studies their connections with smooth local trigonometric bases. Though much of the paper holds in a more general but less elementary context; the band-limited case has been emphasized in order to avoid convergence problems by reducing infinite series to sums which have only finitely many non-zero terms. Through the elementary and highly elegant treatment some of the results allow for simpler statements and more transparent proofs.
