Let \(L_p\) \((1\leq p\leq \infty)\) be spaces of \(2\pi\)-periodic functions \(f: \mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}\) with the corresponding norms \(|\cdot|_p= |\cdot|_{L_p[0, 2\pi]}\); \(W^r_p\) \((r\in \mathbb{N})\) be the class of functions \(f\in L_\infty\) such that \(f^{(r- 1)}\) is locally absolutely continuous and \(|f^{(r)}|_p\leq 1\); \(W^r_V\) be the class of functions \(f\in L_\infty\) such that \(f^{(r- 1)}\) is locally absolutely continuous and \(V^{2\pi}_0(f^{(r)})\leq 1\); \(S_{2n, r}\) \((n\in \mathbb{N},\;r\in \mathbb{Z}_+)\) be the space of \(2\pi\)-periodic polynomial splines of order \(r\), deficiency 1 with the nodes \(k\pi/n\), \(k\in \mathbb{Z}\). The quantity \(E(f, {\mathfrak R})_p= \inf\{|f- u|_p: u\in {\mathfrak R}\}\) is the best approximation of the function \(f\in L_p\) by the set \({\mathfrak R}\subset L_p\) in the metric of the space \(L_p\). The best approximation of the class of functions \({\mathfrak M}\subset L_p\) by the set \(\mathfrak R\) in the metric of \(L_p\) is determined by the quantity \(E({\mathfrak M}, {\mathfrak R})_p=\sup\{E(f,{\mathfrak R})_p: f\in {\mathfrak M}\}\). The author proved the following theorem, which was announced in \textit{N. P. Kornejchuk} [``Splines in approximation theory'' (1984; Zbl 0532.41009)]: Let \(r= 3, 4,\dots\) and \(\{\varepsilon_n\}^\infty_{n= 1}\) be a nonincreasing sequence of positive numbers. Then, as \(n\to \infty\), \[ E(W^r_1, S_{2n, r- 1} \cap (1+ \varepsilon_n) W^{r- 1}_V)_1\asymp \begin{cases} n^{- r} \varepsilon^{1- r/2}_n,\quad & \varepsilon_n n^2\to \infty,\\ n^{- 2}, \quad & \varepsilon_n n^2= O(1).\end{cases}. \]
