Let \(\Lambda\) denote a countable set in \(\mathbb{C}\) with \(\infty\) as unique limit point: \(\Lambda \subset \{| \text{Im} z | \geq h > 0\}\), \(n(r,\Lambda)/r = a/ \pi + o(1)\), \(r \to \infty\), \(\sum_{\lambda \in \Lambda, | \lambda | < r}\) \(1/ \lambda = O(1)\), where \(n (r, \Lambda)\) is the number of elements in the set \(\Lambda \cap \{| z | < r\}\). Let \(e_ \lambda^ a (x) = \exp ( - i \overline \lambda x)\), \(0 \leq x \leq a\); \(e_ \lambda^ a (x) = 0\), \(x > a\) or \(x < 0\), and let \(E(a, \Lambda) = \{e_ \lambda^ a\): \(\lambda \in \Lambda\}\). Further let \({\mathcal L} (z) = \exp (qz) \Pi_ \Lambda (1 - z/ \lambda) \exp (z/ \lambda)\). In this paper a criterion for the unconditional basis property of exponentials in \(L^ 2 (0,a)\) is shown: Theorem. The following conditions are equivalent: a) the system \(E(a, \Lambda)\) is an unconditional basis in \(L^ 2 (0,a)\); b) the portions \(\Lambda_ \pm\) of the set \(\Lambda\) in the upper halfplane \(\mathbb{C}_ +\) and the lower halfplane \(\mathbb{C}_ -\) satisfy the Carleson condition, and for some \(q\) the Muckenhoupt condition \((A_ 2)\) is satisfied for \(| {\mathcal L} (t) |^ 2\); c) \(\Lambda\) satisfies the Carleson condition and \(\text{dist} (\overline \Theta CB\), \(H_ +^ \infty) < 1\), \(\text{dist} (\overline \Theta CB\), \(H_ -^ \infty) < 1\). Here \(\Theta (z) = \exp (iaz)\) and \(B(z)\), \(C(z)\) are Blaschke products with the zero sets \(\Lambda_ +\) and \(\{\overline \lambda\): \(\lambda \in \Lambda\}\) respectively, \(H_ \pm^ \infty\) are the Hardy spaces in \(\mathbb{C}_ \pm\).
