This paper is interested in finding splittings for the map \(D\): MSpin\(\to\)ko given by the Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro orientation for spin- bundles in connective real \(K\)-theory. It is shown that there is no \(s\): ko\(\to\)MSpin which is a map of ring spectra and splits \(D\). However, there is a 2-local map inducing algebra homomorphisms in \(Z/2Z\)-homology which gives a splitting. This is applied to show that there is a 2-local isomorphism \(\Omega_ *^ {\text{Spin}} (X)/T_ *(X) \to \text{ko}_ *(X)\) induced by \(D\), where \(T_ *(X)\) is the subgroup of bordism classes \([E,f \circ p]\) with \(f\): \(B \to X\) a map of a Spin manifold into \(X\) and \(p\): \(E \to B\) is an \(HP^ 2\) bundle over \(B\) with structure group \(PSp(3)\). Finally, it is shown that if \(M\) is a closed Spin manifold of dimension at least 5 with fundamental group \(\pi\) being a finite 2-group and if the image in \(\text{ko}_ *(B \pi)\) of the map \(M \to B \pi\) classifying the universal cover is zero, then \(M\) has a metric of positive scalar curvature.
