A filtration problem through a partially saturated porous medium is considered. This problem is a free boundary problem in which the free boundary separates the saturated and the unsaturated region. In the saturated region, the governing partial differential equation is elliptic, in the unsaturated region parabolic. It is shown in the paper that the free boundary between the two regions is a regular interface, at least locally in time. To prove this result the problem is approximated by a sequence of regular parabolic problems, and classical a priori estimates for parabolic problems are employed. The result is only shown for the unit square in the plane, but the author claims it can be extended to much more general situations.
