    Let \(\Omega\) be an unbounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^ 2\) with noncompact boundary \(\partial \Omega\). Consider the non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations: \[ \begin{cases} (\partial u/\partial t) - \Delta u + u \cdot \nabla u + \nabla p=0,\quad \text{div} u=0,\;x \in \Omega,\;t>0, \\ u |_{\partial \Omega} = 0;\quad u |_{t=0} = a. \end{cases} \tag{N-S} \] We prove the existence and uniqueness of a global strong solution of (N--S) under the assumption \(a \in L^ 2_ \sigma\). We show also the decay properties of the strong solution \(u\) and of its higher derivatives \(\partial_ xu\), \(\partial^ 2_{xx} u\), \(\partial_ t u\), \(\partial^ 2_{tx} u\) in \(L^ r\) \((2 \leq r \leq \infty)\) spaces. In 2- D unbounded domains, there are no \(L^ p-L^ r\) estimates for the semigroup \(\{e^{-tA}\}_{t \geq 0}\), where \(A\) is the Stokes operator. Investigating the asymptotic behaviour of the resolvent \((A + \lambda)^{-1}\) as \(\lambda \downarrow 0\), we prove our theorem. The constants appearing in the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality and in the extension operator are also calculated to get a better decay rate.
