    M. Broué has introduced the notions of a perfect isometry and an isotypy into representation theory of finite groups. One of his main conjectures asserts that, for any prime \(p\), a \(p\)-block with abelian defect group is isotypic to its Brauer correspondent. This conjecture is known to imply, among other things, that the numbers of irreducible ordinary (or modular) characters in both blocks coincide and that Brauer's height zero conjecture holds for such blocks. The authors verify Broué's conjecture for the prime \(p = 2\) and the principal block. Their method uses J. Walter's structure theorem for groups with abelian Sylow 2-subgroups and is basically a reduction to simple groups. The reduction process involves the Glauberman correspondence, Shintani descent and results on isomorphic blocks by J. Alperin and E. C. Dade.
