Let \(\mathbb{F}_ n\) be the Hirzebruch surface defined over \(\mathbb{C}\) and \(H\) an ample line bundle on it. We denote by \(M_ H(c_ 1,c_ 2)\) the moduli space of rank 2 \(H\)-stable torsion free sheaves on \(\mathbb{F}_ n\) and by \(M_ H(c_ 1,c_ 2)_ 0\) the open subset consisting of locally free sheaves. We determine the Picard groups of these moduli spaces for suitably chosen \(H\) when \(c_ 1\) has the form \(c_ 1=-C-mf\) where \(C\) and \(f\) are divisors corresponding to sections and fibers of the natural projection \(\mathbb{F}_ n\to\mathbb{P}^ 1\), respectively. Our main result is the following. If \(m\) is normalized so that \(m=1\) or 2 and \(c_ 2>m+1\), we have \(\text{Pic} M_ H(c_ 1,c_ 2)\cong\mathbb{Z}^{\oplus 3}\) and \(\text{Pic} M_ H(c_ 1,c_ 2)_ 0\cong\mathbb{Z}^{\oplus 2}\). Their generators are given as determinants of direct image sheaves of universals families. The proof depends on the monad construction of stable sheaves.
