The author studies solutions \(R\) in \(\text{End }M \otimes \text{End }M\) to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, \(M\) a finite-dimensional vector space. For such an \(R\), there is a bialgebra \(A(R)\) and \(R\) is recoverable from \(A(R)\). The author determines when \(R\) is obtainable from a finite-dimensional quasitriangular Hopf algebra. The answer involves left quantum Yang-Baxter \(H\)-modules, i.e., \(M\) is a left \(H\)- module, right \(H\)-comodule with an axiom connecting the two structures. Using this, examples are given of solutions which do not arise from a finite-dimensional quasitriangular Hopf algebra. These examples are quite elementary, involving some quantum parameter which is not a root of unity.
