Let \(\Lambda\) be a left Artinian ring which has vanishing radical cube and \(n\) isomorphism classes of simple left modules. The (left) finitistic dimension of \(\Lambda\) is the supremum of the projective dimensions of those finitely generated left \(\Lambda\)-modules which have finite projective dimension. The following is a conjecture due to Rosenberg and Zelinsky: Given a finite dimensional algebra over a field, its finitistic dimension is finite. Finiteness and some weak upper bounds for the finitistic dimension of \(\Lambda\) have previously been obtained by the author and \textit{E. L. Green} [Math. Z. 206, 505-526 (1991; Zbl 0707.16002)]. In the paper under review the author establishes tight upper bounds on the finitistic dimension of \(\Lambda\). It is shown that the global dimension of \(\Lambda\) is either infinite or bounded above by \(n^2-n\) and the finitistic dimension of \(\Lambda\) is always less than or equal to \(n^2+1\). The key to these estimates is a sequence of matrix groups which stores homological information on \(\Lambda\) in an efficient form, but the details are too elaborate to be cited fully.
