The index theorem for elliptic operators was first proved by \textit{M. F. Atiyah, V. K. Patodi} and \textit{I. M. Singer} [Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 77, 43-69 (1975; Zbl 0297.58008)]. They computed the index under the assumption that the structures near the boundary are product. In the present paper their results are generalized to elliptic complexes of Dirac type, where the structure near the boundary is not product. The author associates to the elliptic complexes some tangential operators on the boundary, which he uses to define different boundary conditions of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type. He computes the index of the twisted spin complex, compatible complexes of Dirac type, which include the \(\text{spin}^ c\) complex and the Dolbeault complex for a Kähler metric, the twisted signature complex, the DeRham complex, and the twisted Yang-Mills complex. The author uses heat equation methods which rely on recent results of \textit{G. Grubb} [Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 17, No. 11/12, 2031-2077 (1992; Zbl 0773.58025)]. The index of operators on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary is discussed for the twisted DeRham complex and \(\text{pin}^ c\) complexes. If the boundary is not empty, the index can be non-zero. An appendix contains the techniques of invariance theory, which are used in the paper.
