A primary purpose of this thought provoking paper is to discuss how transducers and ergodic techniques might deal with questions concerning the preservation of normality and near normality of presentations of real numbers under certain base changes. In particular, the author gives a new proof, using automata and results from symbolic dynamics, of Maxfield's theorem to the effect that normality to base \(p\) is equivalent to normality to base \(p^ k\).
